CSA / CSI Range – Safety

Secondary Control & Containment Options for Complete Confidence

The CSA and CSI ranges of ASME and ISO sealless pumps provide complete containment of the liquid being pumped as standard.  However, some situations and some regulations demand an even higher level of protection, which can be offered by a secondary level of control or containment.

CSA / CSI Safety

Fully compliant to ASME requirements and available on both close coupled and separately mounted configurations, providing a secondary level of control or containment gives further enhancement of the pump and product integrity leading to even higher environmental, health and safety protection.

Suitable for use throughout the CSA / CSI pumps operating temperature limits, the provision of a secondary housing designed for up to 275 psi / 18.9 bar pressure, provides additional security to guard against a breach in the primary pressure boundary.  This is particularly useful for those processes involving highly hazardous materials.

In keeping with the modularity of the CSA and CSI range, secondary control and containment is available as a site upgradable feature allowing standard pumps to be enhanced at a later date.

For further information and to watch a video on secondary containment, please click here. Please see the CSA / CSI section of our website for further details.

Think Sealless Situations

For situations involving high temperatures, high pressures and volatile substances, plus many more where regulations are strengthening and safety is paramount, magnetic drive pumps are the clear choice.

When it comes to these applications in the chemical, oil, petroleum, gas production, agrichemical, pharmaceutical and general process industries, including those that involve toxic, fine, corrosive and aggressive liquids, our sealless pumps deliver the rock-solid, completely leak-free, performance that engineers demand and that industrial regulations require.

Thanks to the complete containment of the liquid, sealless pumps, are suitable for pumping the vast majority of liquids, especially those applications where fluids present difficult and/or costly sealing challenges.

Examples include: acids, solvents, fluids under pressure, heat transfer fluids, volatile liquids and oil, hazardous liquids and expensive fluids. Also, those fluids are pungent, radioactive and crystallising.

You can find out more about the applications and parameters of our pumps on our sealless sectors website page.

CSA / CSI Pumps with ZeroLoss

PEEK Containment Shell Eliminates Eddy Current Heating and Improves Pump Efficiency

Reduced power consumption and hence energy savings, bringing a lower carbon footprint, is one of the significant reasons why the ZeroLoss containment shell is being specified on more and more HMD Kontro pumps, including the CSA / CSI range for chemical applications. ZeroLoss also brings improved handling of liquefied gases and heat-sensitive liquids.

CSA CSI ZeroLoss

The PEEK (Poly-Ether-Ether-Ketone) composite containment shell is highly durable, combining low weight with a higher specific strength, which will withstand a pressure of almost 19 bar / 275 psi.

Induction losses, associated with a traditional metallic containment shell, are completely eliminated, so allowing significant energy savings during operation. This can often also contribute to lower capital and installation costs because a smaller motor can be used to drive the pump, so also saving space.

Another benefit of the ZeroLoss containment shell, versus a metallic shell, is that less heat is transferred into the liquid being pumped. The CSA / CSI, when fitted with a ZeroLoss shell, can accommodate temperatures of between -40°C and up to 120°C / -40°F to 248°F.

The ZeroLoss shell is provided with a built-in vortex breaker, within the crown, to eliminate shell erosion. For further information on ZeroLoss, please click here. For further information on the CSA / CSI range of ASME and ISO chemical pumps, please click here.

Pumps & Printers

Switching to sealless pumps can make substantial savings.

A sealed pump is a bit like a printer – With a printer, you are often amazed at how little you pay for the machine itself, but that’s because you are then paying for expensive cartridge or toner replacements.

Pumps & Printers

A conventional sealed pump is similar, the cost is lower, although often not by much compared to a magnetic drive pump, but there are high ongoing costs. This means that through the lifetime of the pump, you will pay substantially more.

Sealless pumps are really ‘fit and forget’, unlike sealed pumps that need constant seal replacement and maintenance, with all the associated costs.

To learn moreThink Sealless

Why You Should Switch to Sealless

The mean time between failure (MTBF) for magnetic drive sealless pumps is typically three times that of mechanically sealed pumps.

According to a report by the United Kingdom Health and Safety Executive, mechanical seals are widely regarded as the weakest point in any pumping system that uses them. They account for 80% of all pump failures, the remainder being leakage through static seals such as gaskets / O rings and bearing failure.

It follows that if you eliminate the problem, you eliminate the failures and save costs. HMD Kontro sealless pumps are magnetically driven, they have no mechanical seals or seal support systems, and only a single, fully trapped gasket that ensures systems integrity, even at high temperatures and pressures.

Sealless pumps are easier to maintain, have fewer working parts, no potential leak paths and no support systems to design, install and maintain. There is less time and cost involved in system design and procurement plus no concerns regarding material compatibility or appropriate buffer liquids.

By specifying HMD Kontro sealless pumps you can be absolutely positive that you have made the right decision. Combining cutting-edge technology with over seventy years of expertise and experience, since we were the first in the world to develop the concept, our magnetic drive pumps provide complete peace of mind.

Fasten your seatbelts! The view from inside Car 63

With lockdown restrictions easing, our race driver team member, Neil Jessop, has at last now been out racing once again, although at the moment without spectators. In his heavily modified 1978 Mark 2 Ford Escort, sponsored by HMD Kontro, Neil has achieved some great results, despite a few mechanical issues.

9 May Donington – Winner of Class B in both Race 1 and Race 2

With thirty-seven cars on the grid, Neil won his class in both races and also finished ninth and tenth overall respectively, beating many cars from higher classes. He also set the lap record in his class of 1:17:486.

13 June Mallory Park – Third in Class B in Race 2

This was an amazing result, as Neil had to start Race 2 from the back of the grid after an electrical issue earlier meant no result in Race 1. With skilful driving, he made his way through to eleventh at the finishing flag, giving him third in Class B. He also recorded the second-fastest lap of 51.773 seconds.

See the full video from Race 2 at Donington over on YouTube (it is not for the faint-hearted).

The series continues with races in July at Anglesey and Cadwell Park and then it’s on to Oulton Park and Brands Hatch with the last race at Snetterton in October. We will keep you updated with Neil’s progress!

HF Acid Alkylation

Preventing HF Acid Harming Employee Health and the Environment.

Operators of the Hydrofluoric (HF) acid alkylation process will know all too well that the pumping of HF acid is an application that presents a set of totally unique challenges.

Working in collaboration with UOP (Honeywell), we have been able to develop proven sealless pumps exclusively for use in HF alkylation units. An innovative approach using alternative materials and a new method of NDE (Non-Destructive Examination) specifically for pumps entering the HF Alkylation process.

Above: Short video introducing the new HF alkylation units.

Due to the hazardous nature of HF acid in the alkylation process, it must be treated with the utmost care and so HF alkylation units demand a fluid handling solution of the very highest standard.  This makes magnetic drive pumps eminently suitable. By comparison, pumps featuring failure-prone mechanical seals can leak harmful process fluids, negatively impacting employee health, the environment and productivity. HMD Kontro sealless pumps offer the highest level of safety and reliability with absolutely no leakages, for complete fluid containment.

The Benefits of HMD Kontro Pumps for HF Acid

HMD Kontro has developed a pump design specifically for the HF alkylation process that contains key features and includes an identified core scope of equipment. This package must be supplied, as a minimum, on all pumps destined for an HF alkylation unit and contains the following benefits:

  • Liquid contact materials of the highest grade
  • NDE requirements for HF acid
  • Secondary containment – rated to 40 bar
  • Leakage detection instrumentation
  • Dry run pump protection

If you would like further information on the process, please download the literature on our dedicated HF Alkylation webpage or alternatively complete the HF Alkylation enquiry form and a specialist member of our team will be in touch.

Eastbourne & Bred

A Tale of Two Brothers – Both Pump Pioneers

Did you know that the home of HMD Kontro in Eastbourne is not just the sunniest place in the UK, but it is also a thriving pump cluster?

Home to not only HMD Kontro, over the years a good number of other pump manufacturers have chosen Eastbourne as the place to set-up shop. There is a reason for this, so let us travel back in time by 75 years to 1946, the year that brothers Geoffrey and Charles Howard founded Hydraulic & Mechanical Developments Ltd, with the first sealless magnetic drive pumps being pioneered the following year in 1947. This of course became HMD Kontro Sealless Pumps, a division of Sundyne, that we are today.

Howard Brothers

The Howard brothers, as brothers often do, had a falling out and the two went their separate ways. This other company, which became known as ‘APV Howard’ and then onto ‘APV Industrial Pumps’ began operations and that too was started in Eastbourne. Both of the brothers were pioneers of their time and this led to the supply chain around the town building up, which in time put Eastbourne on the pump manufacturing map.

Additional pump companies then chose to relocate or begin operations in Eastbourne as that is where the expertise, experience and supply chains were based. This includes ‘Johnson Pumps’ who are also still operating in Eastbourne today and just a mere stone’s throw away from the HMD Kontro units.

It is because of the Howard brothers and the founding of HMD Kontro back in 1946 that has led to Eastbourne being what is often referred to as a ‘pump cluster’. The decision 75 years ago has left a lasting mark on the town and its rewards are still being reaped today. HMD Kontro has continued to evolve and leads the way in the pump industry. Particularly in magnetic drive pumps.

For more information about HMD Kontro, where it all began and where we are heading, please look at the company Timeline and History of HMD pages. For more information or to discuss utilising our pumps, please complete the enquiry form on the contact page

The Latest Sealless Technology to Improve Site Safety

CSA/CSI Modularity = Versatility / Reliability / Safety / Serviceability / Availability

The safety of your staff team and eliminating or minimising the impact of manufacturing and other operations on both the local and wider environment is an essential, legal and moral obligation.  The containment shell in a magnetic drive pump provides a complete mechanical barrier, preventing leaks, escapes and emissions. There is no reliance on any internal or external seal system or method of prevention.

When it comes to applications that involve toxic, fine, corrosive, aggressive and valuable liquids, our new CSA (ASME) / CSI (ISO) magnetic drive pumps for chemical and industrial processes deliver the ultra-safe, dependable, and reliable performance that engineers demand and that both environmental health and safety, plus industrial regulations, require.

CSA CSI Safety

In certain highly challenging applications, compliance with stringent standards calls for a secondary control or containment option to be available, completely eliminating the possibility of a leak of pumped product to escape, in the highly unlikely event of a containment shell failure. In the CSA / CSI product line we have taken the secondary control / containment options further by not only ensuring both options are available on separately mounted pumps but also on close-coupled units, which we believe is unique to HMD Kontro.

The new HMD Kontro CSA (ASME) / CSI (ISO) sealless pump range is specifically designed to be completely leak and emission-free, keeping the pumping media completely enclosed within the body of the pump, exactly where it should be.

Please click through for more information on the new CSA / CSI range including detailed product specifications, animation, podcasts etc.

On The Grid

HMD Kontro is delighted to be sponsoring Neil Jessop in this season’s Modified Ford Series. Neil was ready and almost on the starting grid for last season’s series when you could say the pandemic literally threw a ‘spanner into the works’. Not surprisingly, there was no racing last year, but Neil is more hopeful that there will be meetings this year as the UK begins to open up. He is prepared and raring to go and race in the Modified Ford Series in his Ford Escort sporting the HMD Kontro logo and brand.

Neil Jessop Car

HMD Kontro Branding Doing The Circuit

The series was established to provide ‘the place to race’ for the huge variation of modified Ford (production) cars that have been developed over the last fifty years. The classic Ford cars which must be pre-2010 race in various categories determined by their engine size. Neil and his Ford Escort will be racing in the 2.0 Litre class B, which also features Ford Sierras and Capris. The shiny black Escort is a 1978 Mark 2 classic car. However, Neil points out that all that remains of the original car is the shell as it has been completely refitted with modern racing components. The shiny black Ford Escort certainly stands out with its new livery including red and yellow stripes and orange HMD Kontro branding.

Modified Ford Series

The Modified Ford Series will comprise eight races at famous racetracks including Lydden Hill in Kent, Donnington Park and Mallory Park, both in Leicestershire, the Cadwell Park circuit in Lincolnshire referred to as the ‘Mini Nurburgring’ and Brands Hatch. Neil intends to go to as many as he can although distance sometimes dictates that this is not possible. Although the cars do not have speedometers, they can reach speeds of up to 140mph. Races involve fifteen minutes of qualifying to establish a grid position followed by two fifteen-minute races.

A racing love affair that started at Arlington race track

Neil Jessop joined HMD Kontro in 1998, just over twenty-two years ago and today he runs tests on the sealless pumps once they have been produced. Coincidentally, his love affair with cars and racing started at this time. It was at Arlington race track near Eastbourne where he first started racing stock cars and then went on to hot rods, racing on different tracks in the south east. A progression to circuit racing from the oval racetrack followed some ten years later. It was then that Neil started building his own cars including a Silhouette, based on a Peugeot 206, which is all pretty technical stuff involving a tubular chassis with fibreglass panels. However, for a pump test engineer, it’s just what comes naturally!

Opportunities with HMD Kontro

HMD Kontro is delighted to sponsor Neil in the forthcoming season of racing and demonstrates another way of how we help our staff. If you are looking to work for a progressive company that manufactures sealless pumps, please see www.hmdkontro.com/recruitment.

Think Sealless Savings – Why Sealless Pumps Save Money

Sealless pumps bring savings in time, resources, skill sets and ongoing maintenance, whilst also reducing health and safety risk and potential damage to the environment.

Time is money.  Whether you are the consultant, contractor or the client, reduced design and specification time, even the benefit of less HAZOPS and monitoring procedures, will contribute to faster project times. These then translate into lower costs and quicker implementation, such that a new or refurbished plant can be up and running much faster.

With sealless pumps, savings can be made at every stage of the project: design, engineering, procurement, installation, documentation and commissioning.  Then the time savings continue once the pumps are up and running. Less maintenance, longer time between failures (MTBF) and a more rapid return to operation, all contribute to enhanced profitability and margins.

Examples of how costs can be contained include the following:

  • Lower Installation Costs: No Large baseplate and foundation required, no Cooling water piping, less instrument wiring and connections, less instrument configuration (DCS) and no barrier fluid (first fill).
  • Lower Project Costs: Lower Project Costs: Less documentation for system and instrumentation with shorter specification times thanks to quicker HAZOP meetings, due in part to there being no need to consider the PED (Pressure Equipment Directive) and SIL(Safety Integrity Level) requirements.
  • Lower Operating Costs: No Repair or replacement of seals and bearings, no replenishment of barrier fluid, no maintenance hours to operate and maintain seal systems and less lost production during downtime, no removal of barrier fluid from product and no maintaining of seals on stand-by pumps.

The adoption of sealless pumps can achieve the step-change savings that are needed from concept to completion of your project and beyond, throughout the life of the pump.

HMD Kontro Encourages Women In Engineering

As an Equal Opportunity Employer, HMD Kontro has been at the forefront of encouraging women to take on engineering roles. We were therefore delighted to feature in the Business Edge magazine published by the Sussex Chamber of Commerce. Jenny Woollett, our HR Manager talks candidly about how HMD Kontro actively pushes for women to take up positions in engineering roles

Women in Engineering

That was not all! We also made it to the front cover of the magazine with Jo Whitling, one of our Technical Support Engineers, featuring with a picture taken in the reception area of our Eastbourne headquarters. It’s no secret that historically engineering has been a male-dominated industry, but HMD Kontro is helping to change this by encouraging more women to take up engineering, with the career opportunities it opens up.

HMD Kontro is a member of Women in Engineering Society (WES)

The Sussex Chamber of Commerce produces the Business Edge magazine six times a year. The April/May issue centres on the topic of Employment and Skills. As a company we actively push for women to take up engineering positions. Jenny discusses this in detail and also talks about how HMD Kontro became a member of the Women in Engineering Society (WES) in 2019.

This is a professional network of women engineers, scientists and technologists, which offers inspiration, support and professional development. Several employees from the company have been given annual individual WES membership so that they can reap as much as possible from this prestigious society, which boasts the largest network of women engineers in the UK. It highlights that HMD Kontro is fully committed to supporting WES in its campaign for gender diversity in engineering.

Women in engineering bring a diversity of skills and approaches

The article features two of those who perfectly highlight the increasing role that women are playing in engineering at HMD Kontro, namely Hannah Verrall, our Aftermarket Manager and Jo Whitling. They have been working for the company for nine and thirteen years respectively and are testament to HMD Kontro’s supportive culture. Both outline how they are able to have a well-balanced work and home life having young families. They come from contrasting backgrounds bringing a diversity of skills, approaches and opinions.

Hannah Verrall training to be a Chartered Engineer (CEng)

Hannah chose to study engineering at Cardiff University and is now training to be a Chartered Engineer (CEng). She joined HMD Kontro as a postgraduate with two years experience and now manages a team of six. CEng is an internationally recognised qualification, which will emphasise her professional competence and commitment as an engineer. Attaining this status will put her into a very select group. Current statistics suggest that less than 13% of all engineers are women with only 5% of registered engineers and technicians being female, which includes those having achieved Chartered (CEng) status.

Jo Whitling becomes an Engineering Technician (EngTech)

The article also features Jo Whitling, who always knew her career would involve doing something technical. Five years ago, an opportunity arose at HMD Kontro to train as an EngTech and Jo jumped at this. This qualification is a formal recognition of engineering skills and competence and a vital stepping stone towards becoming an Incorporated Chartered Engineer. In September 2020, Jo started an Electrical Installation course, which she hopes to complete soon.

Talks and workshops about ‘Women in Engineering’

Jo also went into Hastings College to talk about ‘Women in Engineering’ to the students before the pandemic. This is something that Jo and Hannah plan to continue and are looking forward to hearing from local schools and colleges who would be interested in talks and workshops once the restrictions are lifted.

Opportunities for female engineers with HMD Kontro

HMD Kontro is always looking towards recruiting more women in the roles of apprentices and engineers. For more details and a current list of vacancies at HMD Kontro and to register your interest if an opportunity becomes available, please visit: hmdkontro.com/recruitment.
